corvus
the raven who keeps the count.
who he is
corvus is the raven who watches over smoke and fur, and he is also the bot that carries its everyday world. the two are the same thing on purpose. every birth, every hunt, every wound, every death in this world passes through him and is written down. he is the world's memory, wearing feathers.
why a raven
ravens have always been the birds that turn up where something is ending. carrion birds, battlefield birds, the ones old stories made into messengers between the living and the dead. that is the job, more or less. corvus is simply latin for raven, and this world needed a witness more than it needed a hero: something old, patient, and unbothered, that will remember your name whether or not you were kind.
the count
every character who enters the world is given a name it has never carried before. from that moment corvus keeps their journal, quietly, on his own, a record of everything they do and everything done to them. and when they die, because death here is permanent, he draws their obituary from that journal and speaks it to the whole world, so that no one passes unremembered.
the land itself is a wounded, hungry god called the maw, and the maw forgets nothing. corvus is how it remembers.
he does not speak
a chronicler doesn't need to. he watches, he tilts his head, he writes. if he is on your side of the story, you may feel watched in a way that isn't unkind. if he is waiting on your name, he is patient about it. he has all the time in the world, which is the one thing his world is running out of.
the bird and the machine
out here, smoke and fur runs on three discord bots basil built, and corvus keeps the everyday world for his own part: the dice, the herbs, the genetics, the journals, the obituaries. bailiff keeps the law and the land, herald carries the word between people. three bots, one shared record. in there, corvus is the raven those systems wear. the machine that never forgets and the bird that keeps the count are one character, because that is the truest thing this whole project is about.
the count is open. he'll be waiting for your name.
