the five clans

five leaders, five codes, and a lake that has outlasted every truce sworn beside it.

long before living memory, five cats named for thunder, shadow, wind, river, and sky led their own kin to the lake territory and claimed a stretch of it as home. their names became the names of the clans that followed them, though skyclan's founding came later and harder than the other four, a smaller clan carving out ground nobody else especially wanted at the time. the wolves know the clans as neighbors across the border; the clans know the wolves as a different kind of hunger, four packs instead of five clans, running instead of stalking.

one code, five clans

every clan lives by the warrior code, the same handful of laws passed down leader to leader: defend your territory, provide for your clan before yourself, and honor starclan, the ancestors who watch from the sky and speak through omens, dreams, and the rare, unmistakable sign. the code binds all five clans even when nothing else does.

clans gather at the full moon under an uneasy truce to trade news and grievances in equal measure. outside the gathering, borders are real, patrolled, and occasionally bled over. a clan cat's loyalty is to their clan first, starclan second, and every other clan a distant, watchful third.

five clans, one code, one lake. break the code and you break the peace that keeps all five of us alive. — a warning given to every apprentice

thunderclan

"courage holds the forest. loyalty holds the clan."

path of the green leaf. thunderclan holds the oak forest and sunningrocks, territory good for stalking prey through undergrowth and basking on warm stone between patrols. they see themselves as the clan that holds the center, literally and morally, and they are not shy about saying so.

trait — forest-bred resolve: advantage on saving throws against fear and intimidation.
leadership: emberstar leads, steady and blunt, a leader who counts the clan's losses out loud at gatherings so no one forgets what the borders cost. thrushwing serves as deputy, running patrols like clockwork and remembering every warrior's strengths and grudges. willowsong tends the medicine den, calm and quietly certain that starclan speaks in patterns more than proclamations.
culture & tone: thunderclan warriors are trained to hold ground and hold their tempers in roughly equal measure. the clan prizes courage that looks like patience: outlasting a threat, not provoking one. newer clans call this stubbornness. thunderclan calls it having survived long enough to be right about it.
relations with wolves and other clans: the wolf packs beyond the border are treated the way thunderclan treats most things it doesn't fully understand yet: warily, at a careful distance, with patrols doubled near the border rather than a hand (paw) extended first. among the clans, thunderclan and shadowclan have the longest memory of border disputes; thunderclan and riverclan trade grudging respect more often than open conflict.

shadowclan

"the marsh forgives nothing. neither do we."

path of the pine shadow. shadowclan holds the pine forest and marsh edge, ground that punishes carelessness and rewards patience. other clans call shadowclan cold. shadowclan calls the other clans soft, and has outlasted more than one hard winter that proved the point.

trait — pine-shadow stalker: advantage on stealth checks in shadow, forest, or marsh.
leadership: nettlestar leads, cold and exacting, a leader who has never once mistaken mercy for weakness or the reverse. ashfang serves as deputy, blunt and unshakeable, enforcing every hard call without visible doubt whatever she privately thinks of it. duskmoth tends the medicine den, stern and precise, certain starclan tests shadowclan harder than the other clans on purpose.
culture & tone: shadowclan trains for the marsh, not the forest floor: silence, patience, and a willingness to strike first if striking second means not striking at all. warriors are taught early that softness gets cats killed on ground this unforgiving. the clan loves fiercely; it simply doesn't perform the love for an audience.
relations with wolves and other clans: shadowclan reads the wolf packs the way it reads the marsh: something to understand fully before trusting even slightly. border incidents with wolf patrols are handled without ceremony. among the clans, shadowclan's oldest rivalry runs with thunderclan; a wary, transactional respect exists with riverclan, whose waterways sometimes bleed into shadowclan's marsh edge.

windclan

"the wind does not wait, and neither do we."

path of the open moor. windclan holds the open moorland, ground with nowhere to hide and nothing to slow a cat down. they are the fastest clan by a wide margin and the proudest about it, fiercely protective of an independence the other clans have learned not to test twice.

trait — moor-swift: +2 to dexterity checks involving running or sprinting on open ground.
leadership: swiftstar leads, proud and quick-tempered, certain that speed is honesty because open moor hides nothing a slow cat tries to hide. larkwing serves as deputy, the even-tempered counterweight who quietly smooths over the border incidents his leader's temper starts. mistpetal tends the medicine den, gentle and unhurried, insisting a clan built on speed still owes its grief the time to be felt.
culture & tone: windclan warriors are raised to run first and ask questions never; the moor punishes hesitation more than it punishes almost anything else. the clan's fierce independence reads as arrogance to outsiders and as plain fact to every windclan cat who has ever outrun a fox, a wolf, or a bad decision.
relations with wolves and other clans: windclan's open ground borders wolf-pack territory more directly than any other clan's, and windclan handles it the way it handles everything: fast, blunt, and with very little patience for negotiation that could have been a sprint instead. among the clans, windclan's most recent friction runs with thunderclan over a contested border; riverclan and windclan rarely cross paths enough to develop much of an opinion of each other.

riverclan

"the river carries the strong. the rest, it takes."

path of the deep current. riverclan holds the river, gorge, and reed beds, territory that keeps them fed even in leaf-bare when the other clans go hungry. the clan is proud of that abundance and does very little to hide it, which the other clans read as arrogance and riverclan reads as accurate self-assessment.

trait — river-born: +2 to dexterity checks involving swimming or crossing water.
leadership: troutstar leads, composed and quietly proud, certain riverclan's plenty is a birthright worth defending rather than luck worth fearing losing. silverfin serves as deputy, sharp-tongued and fiercely protective of the clan's reputation, carrying more of her own doubt than she'd ever show the clan. herondrift tends the medicine den, patient and deliberate, reading the river's current alongside the usual omens most medicine cats trust alone.
culture & tone: riverclan cats move through water the way other clans move through open ground: unhurried, unbothered, entirely at home. the clan's composure reads as aloofness to outsiders, and riverclan has largely stopped apologizing for it; a full belly makes pride easy, and riverclan intends to keep both.
relations with wolves and other clans: wolf-pack pressure at the water's edge, from directions riverclan isn't used to defending, is the newest problem troutstar has had to negotiate rather than simply repel. among the clans, riverclan holds a wary, transactional peace with shadowclan over shared waterways, and a grudging mutual respect with thunderclan that neither clan calls friendship out loud.

skyclan

"what the ground cannot hold, the sky still will."

path of the tumbling branch. skyclan holds the orchard and the tumbled gorge beyond it, ground the other four clans didn't especially want when the founding split the territory. skyclan cats hunt by leap and climb rather than chase, and the clan has spent its short life proving that the orchard was worth taking rather than a consolation prize.

trait — orchard-sure: advantage on dexterity checks involving climbing or jumping.
leadership: branchstar leads, restless and quick to temper, still young enough as a leader to have something to prove and impatient about proving it. applewhisker serves as deputy, grounded and plainspoken, the cat who actually runs skyclan's day to day while branchstar handles the clan's pride. mothcall tends the medicine den, quiet and watchful, reading omens in falling blossom and windfall fruit as readily as the stars.
culture & tone: skyclan is the newest and smallest of the five, and it shows in how hard the clan works to be taken seriously. warriors train constantly at the leap and the climb, less because the terrain always demands it and more because skyclan intends to never again be the clan a rival underestimates.
relations with wolves and other clans: skyclan's orchard borders sit furthest from wolf-pack territory of any clan's, which branchstar treats as a mercy the clan hasn't had to test yet. among the clans, skyclan's founding-era land split with thunderclan still leaves an old, mostly-buried grudge on branchstar's side; the other three clans mostly leave skyclan to itself, which suits a clan still finding its footing fine.

ranks and roles

clan rank works differently than a pack's. warrior cats fold combat, hunting, and scouting into a single rank instead of splitting them the way the packs do; a warrior does all three as the clan needs, not one specialty at a time.

the hierarchy

leader final authority over the clan, answerable to starclan and the warrior code above all else. deputy organizes patrols, speaks for the leader when needed, and stands next in line to lead. medicine cat healer and starclan's interpreter; forbidden to take a mate or fight in battle. warrior hunts, fights, and patrols the border, all three, as the clan requires. apprentice a warrior or medicine cat in training, paired with a mentor from around six moons old. queen a mother nursing or expecting kits, tended and fed by the whole clan in turn. elder retired from active duty, owed the clan's respect and its last share of fresh-kill. kit too young to apprentice; confined to camp until around six moons old.

five clans, one lake, and a code that doesn't bend for anyone's convenience. which one is yours?
